"With your support, you give healing. You give protection. You give life."
In 2025, our SUST Orphan Animal Hospital (OAH) Galați in Galați, Romania, provided medical treatment to 2,420 animals. Since the project began, we have been able to provide free care to an impressive 17,084 animals. The vast majority of our patients are street animals. They have been hit by cars, injured, are weakened, or seriously ill. Many fight for survival every day – invisible to most people.
We stabilize weakened animals, tend to their wounds, treat infections, operate on fractures, and perform life-saving castrations. We give them the time they need to recover.
Every treatment alleviates acute suffering. Every castration prevents further misery. Every medical intervention gives an animal a new chance.
As soon as they have recovered their strength, they return – whenever possible – to their familiar surroundings. To where their companions are. Where people know them, feed them, and keep an eye on them. Before returning, they are neutered and treated for parasites. This prevents further suffering caused by uncontrolled breeding and lays the foundation for a healthy life in the long term.
Because sustainable animal welfare does not mean locking up all animals – but rather reducing suffering, responsibly controlling populations, and helping where help is most urgently needed.
Animals with life-altering injuries. Old or seriously ill animals. Or those who clearly once had a home and have been lost on the streets. They need special protection, continuous medical care – and often a new, permanent home.
But all of this is only possible if people take responsibility. With a treatment sponsorship, you provide precisely this kind of help. Your sponsorship represents all the animals that arrive at our OAH and urgently need medical care. You make surgeries, medication, aftercare, and protection possible.
As a treatment sponsor, you will receive a series of photos of your sponsored animal as well as information about its health and development. You will witness how pain transforms into hope – and weakness into new strength.
In 2016, the Susy Utzinger Foundation for Animal Welfare opened its animal orphanage in Galați. Since then, SUST has financed and organized this animal welfare operation. Caring for these homeless animals until they can either return to their familiar territory, be adopted by their finders, or remain with us at the SUST animal shelter requires a tremendous amount of work: care from veterinary assistants, veterinary treatment, and daily feeding. To cover these costs, we have launched the treatment sponsorship program.
