The SUST Animal Orphanage Hospital Galati has been giving stray animals in need a second chance since March 07, 2016: Sick and injured strays receive free, professional treatment, surgery, and nursing care. In addition to emergency cases, spaying and neutering are performed daily, thus humanely and sustainably controlling the overpopulation of stray animals in the region.
An estimated 10,000 to 12,000 dogs and countless cats live on the streets of the vast Romanian industrial city of Galati. Many are abandoned, injured, killed in accidents, and/or become ill every day – most of them die a miserable death without help. No one cares for these animals. (Passersby usually don't take such animals in distress to the vet for fear of the high costs.) The remaining animals reproduce uncontrollably, producing numerous, unfortunately unwanted, offspring.
In addition to the SUST shelter, the Susy Utzinger Foundation for Animal Welfare has also built a clinic in Galati: This animal orphanage provides refuge and help for street animals! Accidental, injured, and sick animals receive veterinary care here, and spaying and neutering of dogs and cats is also carried out regularly. The Susy Utzinger Foundation for Animal Welfare organizes and finances the Orphan Animal Hospital in Galati and covers the veterinary costs, finances medications, operations, therapies and care.
In addition to providing free neutering and treatment for stray animals, SUST is also actively involved in other areas to find sustainable solutions to local animal welfare problems: training and further education for specialists, optimizing animal shelters, informing and educating the public, and promoting the rehoming of homeless animals directly within the country..
