Sanctuary and veterinary care for street animals in Bucharest, Romania
The SUST Animal Orphanage Hospital in Bucharest has been giving stray animals in need a second chance since June 01, 2016: Sick and injured strays receive free, professional treatment, surgery, and nursing care. In addition to emergency cases, spaying and neutering are performed daily, thus humanely and sustainably controlling the overpopulation of stray animals in the region.
Countless dogs and cats live on the streets of Romanian cities. Every day, many are abandoned, injured, have accidents, and/or become ill – most of them die a miserable death without help (passersby usually don't take such animals in distress to the vet for fear of the high costs). The remaining animals reproduce uncontrollably, producing numerous, unfortunately unwanted, offspring.
Rescue and urgently needed veterinary care are now being provided in Romania at the Susy Utzinger Foundation's animal orphan hospitals in the cities of Galati, Bucharest, and Moreni: stray dogs and cats (and many other animal species) find refuge and veterinary care here. In addition, spaying and neutering of dogs and cats is carried out regularly. The Susy Utzinger Foundation for Animal Welfare organizes and finances the Orphan Animal Hospital in Bucharest and covers the veterinary costs, medications, surgeries, therapies, and care.
In addition to providing free castrations and treatments for street animals, SUST is also actively involved in other areas to find sustainable solutions to local animal welfare problems: training and further education of specialists, optimization of animal shelters, information and education of the population, and promotion of the rehoming of homeless animals directly within the country.
