As part of its social work for animals, the Susy Utzinger Foundation for Animal Welfare is increasingly being asked for support by pet owners affected by poverty. Many of them find themselves in a situation where even caring for their own animal becomes a major challenge due to rising living costs, illness, or an unexpected twist of fate.
It is precisely at times like these that not only people but also their animals find themselves in distress. When money barely covers the bare necessities, there is often no financial means for food or other essential supplies. For the animals affected, this means a direct burden, and for their owners, often additional distress and great worry.
To provide rapid and targeted assistance in such situations, the SUST (Swiss Foundation for Animal Welfare) launched the "Fill Your Bowl" project. Through this initiative, the foundation supports animals belonging to owners facing financial hardship by providing free food and essential supplies. In this way, the SUST offers concrete and immediate help where it is urgently needed.
"Fill Yourself, Little Bowl" helps ensure that no bowl goes empty and that animals can be cared for even in difficult times. At the same time, the project provides relief to people in acute need and helps prevent the relationship between humans and animals from being further strained by existential worries.
With this service, SUST takes responsibility for animals that find themselves in difficult situations through no fault of their own. The help is practical, direct, and effective—and it reaches exactly where it noticeably improves the daily lives of both people and animals.
Issue days
On the first Friday of every month, pet owners can obtain free dog and cat food from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the SUST animal welfare warehouse.
Requirements for receiving free pet food
Presentation of a current confirmation from the social welfare office, IV/EO confirmation, tax statement (maximum monthly income of CHF 2500/individual or CHF 4000/family).
