Help for animals belonging to people affected by poverty

A particular focus of SUST's work is its social services for animals: Many people living in poverty have a pet as their only companion, but can barely afford to keep their animals or even provide veterinary care. This is a Swiss problem that is rarely discussed: Untreated illnesses, lack of parasite treatment, and unwanted litters (due to a lack of funds for neutering) are the sad consequences, negatively impacting the lives of both animals and their owners. Many health problems could be resolved in their early stages if these people had someone to turn to for help with their animals' issues; however, they and their animals are often denied access to veterinary clinics because they lack the financial means or because they are viewed with suspicion due to their addiction. The result is that the animals suffer in silence for months or years until they often ultimately have to be euthanized.

The Susy Utzinger Foundation for Animal Welfare collaborates with street work organizations, animal food banks, social services offices and integration projects throughout Switzerland, supporting these pet owners on various levels:

  • Veterinary care: SUST veterinarians are regularly deployed to various locations throughout Switzerland. During these deployments, they provide first aid, treat animals, vaccinate and deworm them, perform other treatments and minor procedures, and discuss and plan follow-up treatments.
  • Castrations: SUST supports castration of animals presented at consultations.
  • Food deliveries: SUST delivers animal feed to its partners for free distribution to impoverished pet owners.
  • Education and prevention: With their sound expertise, the SUST (or the SUST veterinary team during consultation hours) informs animal owners about animal welfare-related topics using brochures or in personal conversations, thus helping to avoid dangerous situations for the animals.

The SUST currently supports the following institutions:
