During our spay/neuter campaigns in Switzerland, we repeatedly discover animals in urgent need of medical help—mostly cats that are sick, injured, or in poor condition. Many of them live on farms or in colonies where they are tolerated and sometimes even fed, but were never intentionally acquired. This is precisely why often no one feels truly responsible when one of these animals is suffering and needs veterinary treatment.
This hardship is also evident in another setting: veterinary clinics. When surgery or treatment incurs high costs, owners sometimes surrender their animals with a waiver. This is a devastating blow for the animals. They not only lose their homes but often also the security of knowing someone will care for them. Yet, with the right medical care, many of them would have a very good chance of recovering and living longer.
This is precisely where the Susy Utzinger Foundation for Animal Welfare helps with its "Sorgentierli Schweiz" (Sorgetierli Switzerland) project. The foundation provides veterinary treatment for animals that would otherwise fall through the cracks: for injured or sick surrendered animals as well as for Swiss cat colonies. Where no one can or wants to pay, the foundation ensures that necessary help is still available.
To ensure that this support reaches those who need it quickly and effectively, SUST collects earmarked donations for individual animals and specific treatments via its social media channels. All incoming contributions are used directly for the stated purpose. If more donations are received than are needed for a particular case, the surplus goes into the "Sorgentierli CH-Kässeli" (Sorgentierli CH fund). This allows the next animal in need to be supported as well.
Sorgentierli Schweiz (Sorge Animal Switzerland) not only provides treatment for animals in difficult times, but also gives them hope. The project helps prevent animals from being euthanized for purely financial reasons—even when surgery or therapy would offer a good chance of recovery. It gives a chance to those for whom often no one else will fight.
Because every animal deserves help when it suffers. And sometimes, this very help determines its life, healing, and future.

For fundraising appeals on its social media channels, SUST requires one or more recent photos of the animal, as well as basic information (weight, age, origin, future plans for the animal, etc.). After payment of the bill and the animal's recovery, SUST must be provided with another photo, which will be used to thank donors. SUST may use the provided images and videos for its own purposes without further request.
The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (SUST) covers all costs associated with the treatment of the animal in question, provided these costs can be covered by the fundraising appeal or the contents of the "Sorgtierli CH-Kässeli" (Sustainable Animal CH Donation Fund). Therefore, it does not guarantee 100% cost coverage. The SUST transfers its contribution directly to the treating veterinarian. Retroactive reimbursements or cost sharing are only possible in exceptional cases.
Only requests from partner associations and veterinarians will be considered.
