Less suffering for street animals in Romania

Hundreds of thousands of stray dogs and cats struggle to survive, while new kittens are constantly being born. SUST spays and neuters them in its animal orphanages, through local campaigns, and via partner organizations.

To curb animal suffering

No living being deserves to be unwanted.

For countless dogs and cats, an unwanted life ends sadly and prematurely. The SUST witnesses this almost daily in its operations: puppies are abandoned, stray animals are captured, and many languish in appalling conditions while new offspring are constantly being born.

If the number of stray animals decreases, poison and guns will no longer be used against these "nuisance" animals. This will slow down animal suffering, slowly but steadily and sustainably.

Our Process

This is how a castration procedure works

Properly conducted castration campaigns require patience and experience. This is how, for example, SUST's partners in Ukraine work:

  1. CollectFriendly dogs are collected by hand, shy animals are sedated with a tranquilizer gun and carefully placed in the car.
  2. OperateAt the veterinary clinic, dogs undergo professional and humane surgery as part of the SUST castration campaigns.
  3. Mark IrishAn ear tag shows from a distance that an animal is neutered. This saves it from further attempts to catch it.
  4. ReturnOnce the dogs are awake, they return to where they were found. There they are fed and cared for as needed.

How the SUST is being neutered abroad

SUST conducts ongoing castration campaigns in various countries, including Romania, Hungary, Egypt, Italy and Ukraine.

In their own hospitals

Stray dogs and cats are regularly neutered at SUST animal orphanages. In the Bucharest hospital alone, 302 animals were neutered in March 2026.

Castration campaigns

With teams on site

SUST conducts spay/neuter campaigns with international teams and local partners. In August 2026, 150 dogs and cats were spayed/neutered in the villages around Suceava in Romania.

With a budget for partners

Partner organizations receive a castration budget from SUST, for example in eastern Hungary, where many families cannot afford to have their animals neutered. In 2025, SUST facilitated 4,274 castrations in Hungary alone.

Neutering campaigns, the work in animal orphanages, and the budget for partner organizations are funded by donations and bequests. The foundation receives no public funding.
