The Swiss Association for Animal Welfare (VATS) is an association established under Article 60ff of the Swiss Civil Code. The association is a professional organization (OdA) as defined in Article 1 of the Vocational Training Act (BBG). VATS promotes and coordinates the professional and continuing education of animal welfare professionals in Switzerland.
Those who are professionally or privately involved in animal welfare are often labeled as laypeople, do-gooders, extremists, self-appointed experts, emotional, and radical. "Animal rights activists," for example, as members of authorities, in the media, or by animal rights organizations, are consistently contrasted with "experts." This is despite the fact that most people working professionally in animal welfare today possess a sound, often academic, education coupled with years of professional experience, thus demonstrating specialized expertise in the field.
The Swiss Association for Animal Welfare aims to establish the professional profile of "Animal Welfare Specialists" and to continuously promote the professionalization of this profession.
