Trainee program

Swiss Veterinary Continuing Education: A project of the Susy Utzinger Foundation for Animal Welfare and Kompanima

Knowledge and skills for animal welfare operations

Neutering feral cats and dogs, both domestically and internationally, is an extremely important service for all the affected animals and their unborn offspring. Many young veterinarians volunteer for animal welfare missions hoping to gain practical experience working with animals and learn new skills. However, it is questionable when insufficiently trained beginners perform procedures on animals in distress that they have not yet adequately learned.

A solid foundation in animal welfare training is therefore essential before any deployment and is the subject of this advanced training. This training includes a theoretical component in which veterinarians are taught essential information about working in animal welfare. Please refer to the SUST Academy and SUST Video Library for further information.

Castrations are the most important veterinary procedures in international animal rescue. Beforehand, the animals must be manually examined for pregnancy or any uterine infections. At the same time, it is essential to assess the animal as a whole and initiate any further necessary treatments – for example, the application of antiparasitics or wound cleaning in case of injuries.

We also offer interested veterinarians the opportunity to learn practical skills from experienced animal welfare practitioners. During an open internship (lasting at least 3 weeks), all essential skills, especially neutering dogs and cats, are trained step-by-step under professional guidance and supervision, enabling the trained veterinarians to be deployed in animal welfare campaigns both domestically and internationally.

To apply for this trainee program, please send your CV and a cover letter by email to susyutzinger@susyutzinger.ch (The number of training places is limited).
