SUST provides further training for veterinarians, animal care staff and animal welfare activists in Switzerland and its project countries, so that castration, care and animal shelter work can succeed even where the expertise is currently lacking.
"Let's tackle the problem at its root" is the motto of the Susy Utzinger Foundation for Animal Welfare. In addition to supporting animal shelters, organizing spay and neuter campaigns, and raising public awareness, the training and professional development of specialists is one of the four pillars of their work.
Animal welfare activists learn the principles of handling and caring for animals, as well as managing animal shelters. Veterinarians receive training from internationally recognized colleagues on the latest castration and anesthesia techniques. SUST's veterinary training programs are renowned for their quality and effectiveness.
This lays the foundation for spay/neuter campaigns that meet SUST quality standards. The overpopulation of dogs and cats can only be controlled in the long term and humanely through spaying and neutering. This will prevent countless unwanted offspring from being born and suffering in the first place.

In seminars and webinars, animal welfare activists, SUST volunteers, and interested pet owners learn how to properly treat and care for animals and what is important when running an animal shelter. SUST subsidizes the courses to keep prices low.

Together with experienced partner veterinarians, SUST conducts training courses in castration and anesthesia techniques at universities in various countries, including theory and practical work under supervision.

With Kompanima, SUST prepares young veterinarians for animal welfare missions: with a theory component and an internship of at least three weeks, in which they learn castration under supervision.

Animal shelters and animal welfare organizations can apply for further training for their animal caretakers, tailored to their specific needs. The SUST covers 80 percent of the costs.

Through lectures, seminars and daily collaboration, SUST experts pass on their knowledge to veterinarians, animal caretakers and dog trainers in the project countries, so that the projects can stand on their own two feet.

Since 2018, after completing mandatory training courses, volunteers have been able to undertake an internship of at least three weeks at the SUST animal shelter and the animal orphanage hospital in Galati, Romania.

In 2017, SUST, together with Kompanima and the Foundation for Animal Law, founded the Swiss Association for Animal Welfare in the Working World (VATS). Its aim is to establish the professional profile of "Animal Welfare Specialist" and it has created a dedicated training course for this purpose.

SUST's activities are financed exclusively through donations and bequests, without any public funding. Your donation enables training courses that empower local professionals to continue their work independently.
