Watch out when mowing the lawn!

June 2023

Time and again hedgehogs sleeping under hedges or bushes are maimed or even killed by mowing equipment such as string mowers. The hedgehog does not react to the noise of the mowing equipment by fleeing, but curls up even more in danger.
Robotic lawnmowers operating unattended also pose a danger to hedgehogs sniffing around the garden at dusk or at night. They are usually hit in the face by the robotic lawnmowers and seriously injured.
On the infopic you can see what to look out for and how to help hedgehogs:
Mow tall grass with care.
Do not run robotic lawnmowers at dusk and at night. Small hedgehogs are sometimes foraging during the day.
Do not leave robotic lawnmowers running unattended and avoid robotic lawnmowers with fixed blades:
Check potential hiding places with a leaf rake before mowing, because hedgehogs can hardly be spotted at their roosts with the naked eye!
Refrain from clearing under shrubs and hedges. Many garden inhabitants are happy to have a natural garden.
And in addition, hedgehogs are happy to have a water bowl in the garden (not milk) when it is hot, so you give hedgehogs and other animals the opportunity to get the liquid they need to survive,
to get the liquid they need to survive.
