Outreach report from SUST-OAH Galati by Mumi Schenk,fairtrain...

August 2023

The  SUST Shelter in Galati (RO),run by the Susy Utzinger Foundation for Animal Welfare (SUST), has been expanded since my last visit in 2019 with large runs and stables for donkeys, goats and sheep. There are also newer containers for materials. Photos from above will follow so you can get an impression how big it is there.

In the new part of the shelter there are about 300 dogs. The number of cats I don't know (yet)... When you arrive with such a big group it is just noisy for about 2 hours. The dogs are very excited about the "foreign intruders". But after about 2 hours these "weird people" are part of it and there is only sporadic barking.
Since there is a big neutering campaign going on and the residents of Galatì are allowed to bring their cats and dogs for neutering, the commotion in the shelter is certainly a bit bigger.
This weekend 4 vets are working at the OAH (Orphan Animal Hospital) and today about 50 dogs and 50 cats were neutered. An unbelievable number.
One volunteer team is assigned to the neutering and the other team is assigned to the endo- and ectoparasite treatments (deworming and parasite profilaxis) of the shelter dogs (I am part of the second team). Our task today was to get to know the dogs in our hall, to partially brush and pet them if already possible, to clean the hall and kennels, to feed the dogs. It was incredibly hot (the air was standing) - certainly around 38 - 40 degrees. The amazing thing was how quickly the dogs get used to new people. When you enter the hall (see movie) most of the dogs rush to the fences of the kennels and yelp - as soon as you enter the individual kennels the dogs disappear into the outside area.
Tomorrow we will start with the deworming and I will report further here....
Have a nice evening and thank you for following my journey. Your Mumi!
