A "few" new guests at the Luanas Dream wildlife rehabilitation center

March 2024

During the cold season, things are usually a little quieter at the "Luanas Dream" wildlife rehabilitation center in Bucharest, Romania. But when several hundred animals need to be rescued at once, everyone is on hand to lend a hand.
In January, the team from our partner organization "Luanas Dream" had to go out to rescue no fewer than 535 bats of the "common noctule" species,
that had been hibernating in an attic and were no longer tolerated there. Each of the delicate animals was then checked for its state of health and provided with special food. As common noctules feed exclusively on flying insects, which they hunt using echolocation, the animals in captivity have to be fed individually by hand. A "giant stage" where every helping hand was welcome.
So that the bats could continue their hibernation in a protected environment after this energy-sapping disturbance, a special refrigerator was purchased to simulate the optimum conditions for hibernation. Hopefully, the animals will be fit and rested when they are released into the wild at the end of March.
SUST has been supporting the "Luanas Dream" wildlife rehabilitation center for many years. It has enabled the construction and expansion of many enclosures and the purchase of various pieces of equipment. In addition, as part of the SUST-Orphan Wildlife @ Wildlife Rehabilitation Center Bucharest, it finances 100% of the rearing and treatment of orphaned, sick and injured young animals, which are released back into the wild after their recovery.
