Attention blue-green algae!

June 2023

Last weekend, a dog died after a walk on Lake Biel. Probably because of poisoning by blue-green algae.
Blue-green algae are actually not algae, but cyanobacteria. A high concentration of nutrients and a lot of sunlight are the perfect conditions for the blue-green algae . That is why there is always an explosive development of blue-green algae in lakes and water bodies.
Here are the recommendations for dealing with blue-green algae from the Health Department of the Canton of Zurich.
Increased concentrations of blue-green algae can be hazardous to health!
- If the density of algae in knee-deep water is so high that you can no longer see your feet, do not swim.
   your feet, do not swim
- Avoid conspicuously colored water surfaces with streaks and flakes
- People with sensitive skin, including small children, should only bathe in clear water.
   clear water
- Avoid swallowing water
- Always shower well after bathing and dry thoroughly
- Restrict playing and exercising with dogs to suitable shore areas with clear water.
   clear water
-Do not allow dogs to drink colored water and rinse their fur if they come into contact with it because
absorption of bacteria by licking is possible
