Danger for dogs from xylitol!

December 2024

Remember: xylitol, also known as birch sugar, is often used as a “healthy sugar substitute” for baking and is found in many sweets, chocolate
and even in some skin creams and homeopathic globules,
harmless for humans, but highly dangerous for dogs!
Just 0.1 g xylitol per kg body weight can cause severe hypoglycemia in dogs, more than 0.5 g can lead to liver failure,
in the worst case even death!
Ferrets, rabbits and other animals are also affected.
How do you recognize poisoning?
* Trembling, apathy, weakness, vomiting and coordination problems.
* Symptoms can occur 30-60 minutes after ingestion.
What to do?
* See a vet immediately!
* Do not self-medicate! Vomiting could worsen the condition.
Precaution:
* Check the ingredients when baking.
* Keep food with xylitol out of reach of dogs.
* Explain to children that sweets are dangerous for dogs.
