Rabies control

The Susy Utzinger Animal Welfare Foundation supports rabies vaccination in many countries

If the domestic animals dog and cat are vaccinated against rabies, humans are also protected: Many people also keep dogs in countries at risk of rabies. However, dogs are also the main transmitters of rabies to humans. If a person is bitten by an infected dog, expert medical care must be provided immediately. This is difficult in remote villages. In addition, most people in many countries cannot afford the cost of treatment. It is easier and cheaper to vaccinate dogs against rabies as a preventive measure.

The SUST has therefore been supporting rabies vaccinations for many years.

Rabies vaccinations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

In 2017, SUST once again supported the urgently needed rabies vaccinations in the Virunga National Park.

3004 dogs and 510 cats were vaccinated thanks to the contributions of SUST. These vaccinations are crucial: Rabies cases lead to killing campaigns of dogs and cats for fear of infecting humans.

With the vehicle that SUST financed some years ago, remote villages are easily accessible. In addition, the vehicle often serves as a temporary clinic if there are no locations for treatment.

The educational materials supplied by SUST also enable African animal welfare workers to educate the population about endo- and ectoparasites and thus prevent further zoonoses (and of course improve the health of animals and their owners).
