Slowing down the animal misery: The SUST tackles it sustainably

Hundreds of thousands of street dogs and cats fight for survival in many countries, countless of them are captured and many of them vegetate under terrible conditions, while new unwanted kittens are born all the time. The suffering of unwanted dogs and cats is infinite in many countries.

Castrations are the only way to reduce the overpopulation of street animals in a long-term and animal-friendly way. Thousands of dogs, cats and other animals have already been successfully operated in various countries by the Susy Utzinger Animal Welfare Foundation. As a result of this measure, countless unwanted animals were not even born in the first place. Such actions have a future: No more emaciated animal mothers on the streets, no more famine and no more sexually transmitted diseases, where the animals perish miserably.

If the number of street animals is reduced, the unwanted, "disturbing" animals will no longer be tortured: No more poisoning actions, no more animals beaten to death, no more shooting actions. In this way the animal misery is slowed down, slowly but steadily and sustainably.

Intensiver Tierschutz-Einsatz in Pata Rât bei Cluj Napoca, Rumänien

SUST animal welfare helpers in action in May in Pata Rât - for a large neutering campaign, veterinary emergency care, and with donations of goods for children.

Pata Rât, Romania

SUST animal welfare helpers were active in May in Pata Rât, near Cluj-Napoca, a modern city in northwestern Romania and unofficial capital of Transylvania. Here, there are universities, a vibrant nightlife, and magnificent historical buildings.

In addition to these aspects, Cluj is also home to Pata Rât, a landfill site to the east of the city where, depending on the source, 1,500-2,000 people live in unimaginably poor conditions. They lack running water, electricity is scarce, there are no heating systems, and access to education and medical care is limited. These people literally live among garbage.

Naturally, there are also a tremendous number of animals living alongside them: dogs, cats, pigs, rats, birds. Many of these animals suffer from chronic illnesses, die from untreated diseases, or as a result of conflicts among themselves or with humans. In May, we deployed a team of SUST animal welfare helpers to Pata Rât, where we treated animals and performed neuterings.

During our missions, when possible, we also support affected people. In this instance, we decided to assist the youngest members of the community. We collected and distributed two pallets of goods to children in need.

Thank you for your donations—whether monetary or in-kind—for the children's goods, which, as shown in the video, are exactly where they are needed most.
