Laying hens

laying hens

The life of a laying hen is short and full of work: after ten to twelve months of intensive egg laying for their producer, they enter what is known as moulting. The moult is a hormonally induced rest during which the laying apparatus of the animals regenerates and the plumage is renewed. The moult lasts two to three months, at least three weeks during which there is a laying break. The hens therefore no longer make the desired profit during this period and are therefore gassed (or killed differently) after this first laying period and replaced by young hens. Tens of thousands of laying hens are killed in Switzerland every year after a few months of their lives.

One of the many facts that is hardly known about the spanned farm animals.  However, there are also ways to consume eggs with a clear conscience:

430 laying hens are looking for a new home

Over two million young laying hens are taken out of service in Switzerland every year because they no longer lay enough eggs.

Such animals find new places through the laying hen campaigns of the Susy Utzinger Foundation. The next one will take place in January in the canton of Aargau.

The life of a laying hen is short and intense: after ten to twelve months, it is no longer in demand as an egg supplier. The hens then enter the so-called moulting period: a hormonally induced resting period during which the laying apparatus of the animals regenerates and the plumage is renewed. During moulting, the hens lay fewer eggs - with the result that the hens are no longer economically viable and become disposable. Healthy, young hens are killed and replaced by new, more productive ones.

The Susy Utzinger Animal Welfare Foundation SUST takes care of such hens: With its regular laying hen campaigns it contributes to the fact that as many laying hens as possible are allowed to live a longer life. The next action will take place in January in Zuzgen (AG). There about 430 brown laying hens are waiting for animal-loving people who can offer them a new, species-appropriate home. These laying hens still live up to their name, by the way. They still lay eggs, only not as many as at their "peak times".

Interested parties have to prove in a form that the animals get a good place to live: https://www.susyutzinger.ch/Metamenu/Formulare/Soforthilfe/Legehennen

In addition, a SUST team is on hand to contact the new owners before and after admission, answer any questions and in some cases visit them.

Questions may be sent by e-mail to legehennen@susyutzinger.ch.
