Dogs - Q&A's

zurück

How do I clarify which countries I am allowed to travel to with my dog? And whether I come back to Switzerland?

Each country has its own regulations for entry and exit with dogs.

It is important that a dog has the following:

- Microchip
- valid rabies vaccination
- passport
- Ev. titer for rabies (entry from country with rabies risk)

The regulations of the destination country must be observed and for the return to Switzerland the re-entry conditions must be fulfilled.

The Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (BLV) is responsible for such issues. There are very many veterinary travel regulations. The online help of the BLV is helpful:
"Mit Hund, Katze und Frettchen über die Grenze".

Important: The entry requirements for dogs vary from country to country and can change at any time at short notice.

In some countries, the requirements are very strict and, for example, an official veterinary health certificate is also required. In some cases, the animals have to spend a certain time in quarantine before they are allowed to cross the border (for example, if you want to travel to Japan). With regard to rabies, various countries also only accept test results that come from a recognized laboratory. In Switzerland, this requirement is often only met by the Swiss Rabies Center in Bern. To be on the safe side, one should therefore inform oneself in good time about the respective regulations at the veterinary authority of the respective country or at its embassy before each trip.

Talk to your veterinarian about the legal requirements as well as the health risks for the dog (e.g.countries with leishmaniasis).
